ICANN Update: Meeting 43 in Costa Rica
By Tim Switzer
ICANN 43 was recently held in Costa Rica – simply said, it was an incredible week on many fronts.
The host country and organization, NIC-Internet Costa Rica, did an incredible job of running a first class event that included more than 1,700 attendees. The participants were treated to an incredibly passionate opening ceremony speech by Costa Rica President Laura Chinchilla. There were some memorable ICANN week events including Music Night and the spectacular Gala, which was highlighted by delightful music from local artist and Grammy award winning group Editus followed by Costa Rica’s Philharmonic National Orchestra.
Costa Rica is one of the greenest nations in the world and those who were fortunate enough to adventure out to the country were in awe of its natural beauty. This made for a perfect setting during the week for DotGreen to highlight all the exciting plans it has for the .green TLD.
The week started with DotGreen and Neustar co-sponsoring a rainforest tree restoration effort and class 4 whitewater river rafting trip thru the rainforest with Rios Tropicales, an organization that has spent years focusing on sustaining the Costa Rican rainforest and local economy. More than 50 Internet delegates from the ICANN community around the world joined in the day]s activity, planting more than a hundred trees and creating incredible memories for all.
Dotgreen had a very busy week as it met with local Costa Rican officials, the press and future partners receiving very positive feedback on the .green initiative. A few of the ICANN key and “lively” Internet policy discussion topics during the week included the New gTLD batching process, WHOIS and the Registrar Accreditation Agreement. One noteworthy observation was the sense of cooperation and open communication between two very important groups in the multi-stakeholder process – the GNSO and the GAC.
DotGreen returns from this incredible week and “green country” more energized than ever to advance the .green initiative!
