Green Spotlight: Stanislav Miler
Mr. Stanislav Miler wowed the ICANN delegates who gathered to learn about the greener side of Prague during the DotGreen People & Planet Event on Saturday, June 23, 2012. He is a long time environmental lifestyle leader full of exciting adventure tales and fun highlights about his path to sustainability. In honor of DotGreen’s visit to Prague for ICANN 44 we wish to highlight one of the inspiring local Czech citizens we met while in the Czech Republic.
Stanislav grew up in the Czech Republic, and has a background in multimedia and film along with a lengthy list of accolades in the industry. Not only does he have his own multimedia company based in Prague, he is involved in numerous art film festivals, has been head of the Multimedia Program at Prague Film School (FAMU) and has taught Multimedia Production at ICCM, the International Center for Culture and Media in Salzberg. But Stanislav’s current passions lie in a different pursuit.

Inspired to travel and share global stories through multimedia, Stanislav started planning a journey that would take him around the world. Consequently, through his Internet research he also became aware of the current oil crisis and global warming through Al Gore’s movie an Inconvenient Truth. With further consideration he decided to focus his trip on becoming an “Eco Journey” in which he could us the opportunity to learn from sustainability efforts in other cultures, and share his growing knowledge about renewable energy.
Starting in 2005, Stanislav began his travels in his Eco Auto, a unique caravan that uses solar power for electricity and runs on vegetable oil collected from restaurants. His expedition has taken him to various parts of the world including India, China, Middle East, and Mexico. Since 2006, Miler has visited over 30 countries in his Eco Auto, and on used vegetable oil traveled more than 100,000 km. His Eco journeys are shared in the form of online blogs, photographs, audio and video podcasts and also as live performances using his cinema screening facility to educate an audience on his activities. Stanislav, a speaker, educator and filmmaker in his spare time, uses his screenings as an opportunity to spread his message effectively.
“The only way to make life on Earth more harmonic is to change our consciousness. My aim is to share my experience and teach how we can live more sustainably”, says Miler.

Stanislav has helped inspire and educate adults and youth on the importance of sustainability, promoting sustainable food production, and environmental, health and ethical benefits of a plant based diet. In his travels, he has given lectures to schools on sustainable transportation, energy, housing and our footprint on the earth. His mission is to inform about life of people in different countries and the environmental impacts of our society.
Currently, Stanislav is working on numerous educational projects concerning sustainability. He has been collaborating with TIMUR and Ekostopa, an Eco School footprint project. One aim of TIMUR is to promote the idea of local environmental reporting and consciousness around environmental footprint. Their tools specialize in calculating footprints for individuals, companies, and cities, and in this case with schools.
Another project shares with students one of Stanislav’s longtime personal activities, recycling oil to use in vehicles. The initiative, called Sber Oleje, or Oil Collection, will collect and recycle used vegetable oil from households, which will then be used as bio fuel for cars. There are currently over 500 schools participating in this program within the Czech Republic. As part of the project, Stanislav visits the schools in his Eco Auto, and gives lectures about ecological transport, use of energy, and carbon footprint. His goal is to visit as many schools as possible, to expand the direct impact of the project.
Miler is also a member of Creative Gate, and is participating in the creation of the Academy of Sustainability, planned to begin this coming fall. The Academy of Sustainability will provide knowledge and share experiences about sustainable housing, food, and transportation, and offer practical advice on how to live more sustainably.
Additional information about Stanislav Miler’s green activities can be found on his website, youtube channel and flickr account.
It was a pleasure and honor to have met Stanislav, a local green personality during our stay in Prague and we are so happy that he could contribute to our green education.
