January 12 marked an exciting day for DotGreen and the Internet community. Since 2007, DotGreen has been working toward making .green a reality, all the while closely following the progression of ICANN’s gTLD program. As many of you know, we’ve been waiting for what seems like forever. Yesterday was the first official step in making the dream a reality. The team gathered around the central table in our office, and with the TAS projected on the screen, we carefully filled in the answers to the first 11 questions. Meanwhile, notes of encouragement came from friends in the industry and the environmental movement alike.
gTLDs promise to change the entire Internet landscape, adding new strings of letters to the right of the dot, and infusing tremendous excitement and potential value into user experience. The process also marks a historic Internet change. The past few months, the program has come under close examination, eventually ending in the conclusion that the process has been adequately vetted and ready to move forward. ICANN adhered to its global multi-stakeholder model of governance during the creation of the progressive gTLD program.
Firsthand, I can say that ICANN’s gTLD program is active and operating smoothly! DotGreen celebrated the first part of our application submission yesterday, and now we have our sights set on even more important dates ahead. On April 12, the application period concludes, and on May 1, we’ll be able to find out even more about the applicants and strings, providing a sneak peak at what the Internet’s future will hold.
